Kenan Professorships: One of the earliest initiatives of the Trust was the creation of the William R. Kenan Jr. Professorships to reward accomplished scholars and professors who are committed to teaching and undergraduate learning. In the first year of grantmaking, the Trust gave $5 million to establish 25 Kenan Professorships at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Mr. Kenan’s alma mater. The Trust also awarded a single professorship at five individual institutions in New York State where Mr. Kenan resided for most of his adult life: Columbia University, Cornell University, New York University, Syracuse University, and the University of Rochester. A total of 61 of these endowed positions were established at 59 colleges and universities in 20 states between 1966 and 2023, with investments from the Trust totaling more than $49.5M.

Grantmaking Scope Broadens: In the 1980s, with the arrival of William "Bill" Friday as the new Executive Director, the Trust broadened the scope of its educational grantmaking beyond professorships to include educational programs for all ages and for a variety of institutions, including early education, elementary education, secondary education, and graduate education. The Trust also began more extensive funding for cultural and performing arts organizations with grants to fund fellowships at the Kennedy Center and through partnerships with University of North Carolina School of the Arts and the Lincoln Center. Arts education for younger students was also a focus through school-based programming and the launch of innovative programs like A+ Schools, intentionally integrating arts learning into core classroom curriculum.

Whole Community Health: The Trust’s grantmaking scope broadened again in the early 2000s to include support for organizations working with diverse populations and in response to several large-scale natural disasters. Inaugural recipients of this expanded funding included food banks and food-rescue organizations. The Trust also focused on access to healthcare through programs for low-income and uninsured patients and rural patients. This area evolved into Human Thriving in 2024.
