“It is given to few to experience the joy I have had in helping young people complete their education.” - William R. Kenan Jr.

Capturing his conviction that education can build a path toward a flourishing and secure life, the Kenan Trust funds projects that promote access to post-secondary pathways through scholarships for tuition and fees, along with post-secondary retention programming to sustain a student’s progress in the academic environment.

Access to Opportunities for Education

Access to education is broader than just admission to a school or program. The Trust funds a variety of projects that aim to support access to educational opportunities, including scholarships, support for bridge programs for students accepted into a post-secondary program or school, and programs for non-traditional students like those involved in the justice system. The Trust’s work in this area is united by the goal of ensuring that any individual, regardless of age or life circumstance, has the opportunity to pursue his or her educational goals in a post-secondary setting.

Retention and Persistence to Degree

Access to education is only the first step. For many students, additional support for academics or finances is needed to help them achieve their goals. The Kenan Trust funds projects designed to help students admitted to a post-secondary program persist to a degree or program completion.
