Overview
Addressing food insecurity requires a multi-pronged approach and partnership among many entities. The Trust’s work in this area focuses on expanding access to food resources for individuals and families while simultaneously supporting local farmers. To accomplish this goal, we accept proposals from entities working on a regional or statewide level that also partner with local farmers and food producers to expand access to fresh, nutritious foods.
Eligible Project Types
The Kenan Trust will fund projects that:
- Expand access to fresh, nutritious, and culturally relevant foods; and
- Source produce or other items from local farmers or food producers.
Eligible Organizations
The Trust will consider proposals for the types of projects listed above from:
- Regional Food Banks; or
- Statewide Associations supporting Food Banks across their state to enhance food distribution and improve access.
The Trust is not accepting proposals from individual food pantries or grassroots organizations at this time.
Size and Duration of Grants
Grants in this focus area will generally begin at $250,000 and may reach $1M for larger organizations demonstrating large-scale impact. Grant durations typically range from 1 – 2 years.

Featured Grant in Food Insecurity: Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina
The Kenan Trust awarded a grant to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina to support the Farm Fresh Nourish initiative. Farm Fresh Nourish is a farm-to-table program that connects local farms and food pantries to expand the use of fresh produce. Participating pantries receive a variety of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables that Second Harvest Food Bank pays small-scale farmers market rate for – spurring economic activity and stability for food producers and improving access to healthy food in local food pantries.
